How to Use Twitter as Bookmark

Ever since Furl was taken over by Diigo, I’ve been using StumbleUpon to bookmark my favorite pages. There are lots of great social bookmarking services out there, and the most popular ones are: Mixx, Reddit, Digg, and Delicious. But have your ever tried bookmarking with Twitter?

Twitter is a micro-blogging service but I recently discovered that it is also good for bookmarking.

Here’s how:

Drag and drop this button: TwitThis to your browser’s shortcuts toolbar.
Just click the ‘TwitThis’ button if you wish to tweet/bookmark a page.
Your Twitter account will pop up and just choose how would you like to tweet the page (Reading:, Check out, Watching:, etc.)
Mark your tweet as favorite and your done.
If you wish to retrieve tweeted/bookmarked pages, just go to your ‘favorites’ tab.

Twitter might not be as good as most bookmarking services, but it can do a good job for quick bookmarking. especially if you installed apps like TweetDeck. I’m in fact using Twitter more often these days to bookmark my pages, and I really love it because it’s so easy and simple.

if you use twitter, SU, digg, facebook, flickr, reddit, etc, these principles will have you nodding your head:

1. if you want people to pay attention to you, you have to pay attention to them.

put simply, you must RECIPROCATE. without this, nothing will happen for you. You can add as many friends as you want, spew out as many messages as possible, but people will just ignore you. Social media is about Establishing Relationships. This, first and foremost.

2. no more spam

bad behaviour is punished with a simple block or unfollow. Instant lifelong banishment. Goodbye to the spam of the email days; in social media YOU have control over what you see and what you don’t see. Big difference.

3. good stuff spreads. Fast.

this is like the word-of-mouth effect in the real world, except times 100. even 1000. Good stuff reaches ‘1 person’ they pass it onto 7, then 7 times 7, in a chain that ripples out in MINUTES. Stuff that is GOLD does rise to the top. Fast.

:4. be real

doesn’t matter what social network you’re on, keep it real. People will appreciate this no end. Everyone is sick of reading advertising copy all over the web, show some humor, insanity, goofiness, or insight. Be different, be real. No-one is as boring as a newsreader. INJECT personality. everyone’s got it, just let it show

5. pick your avatar carefully

doesn’t matter if it’s your real face, a cartoon character, a famous portrait, or just a logo, your Avatar says EVERYTHING. It’s the first point of contact, and the first thing that people will associate with you. Even more than your user name. It sums you up … in 90 by 90 pixels. Choose wisely.

6. log on daily

this sounds like a pure no-brainer, but I have come across people that use twitter maybe once a week. BIG NO NO! the web runs at Warp Speed! Like warp 9.9, doesn’t get much faster than that! If you really want to be in a Social Network, you have to be available, and commit something of yourself to it. It doesn’t have to be hours a day (although some people take this route), but a once-a-day checkin is the very minimum. Be active, be involved, be alive.

7. ask questions, and learn

social networks are evolving systems. Everyone has a piece of the puzzle, some individual insight based on their total experience. There’s HEAPS to learn. If someone seems to be doing it better than you, just ask. It’s very flattering when someone says: “how did you do that” … and in most cases, they will share some of their knowledge. It only empowers YOU to ask questions, doesn’t make you look dumb at all. Be humble, and open.

Unleash The True Power Of Social Bookmarking Sites

I recently observed that I’m being quite enthusiastic about social bookmarking sites; I find myself reading and studying more about them these past few weeks. Well I guess no one can blame me about that, because social bookmarking is indeed fun and very useful.

A lot of bloggers are venturing, incorporating their blogs with social bookmarking sites. But I observed, as I read across forums and blogs, that almost 70% of bloggers says that social bookmarking is not working for them, and that they prefer to use other services such as MyBlogLog and Entrecard. Well I guess this is so because they use bookmarking sites to only one purpose: To generate traffic. It’s their only basis whether social bookmarking is for them or not.

Generating traffic is just one of the power social bookmarking sites has. If a blogger wants to be successful in social bookmarkings, he must learn how to explore and exploit the powers it possess:

THE POWER OF QUALITY CONTENTS

In bookmarking sites, bookmarkers bookmark contents that they find interesting and valuable. Which means quality contents are sifted out from mediocre contents, making the resources in social bookmarking sites very rich. Gaining free access to these rich contents is indeed a privilege.

If you ran out of ideas to post in your blog, contents from social bookmarking sites can give you brilliant post ideas. You can share, reblog, recycle, or use it as reference. Just don’t forget to pingback.

THE POWER OF RAPPORT BUILDING

The members of social bookmarking sites are very diverse, from big time entrepreneurs to plain house wives. With this, social bookmarking sites are firm grounds to build-up rapport. You may prefer surrounding yourself with like-minded people and share personal interests; or perhaps with fellow entrepreneurs and exchange business ideas.

Sharing, discussing and gaining new knowledge from the person itself is something we should treasure. Me, as a blogger, have learned a lot from more experienced bloggers. THE POWER OF DO-FOLLOW

Some social bookmarking sites such as Furl does not use “No-Follow” tags. Meaning bloggers can benefit from them by receiving some “link-juice” which can help increase their blog’s Page Rank. Google prioritizes blogs/sites that has higher Page Rank.

THE POWER OF RIPPLE EFFECT

A bookmarker bookmarks a content then share it to another bookmarker. If this bookmarker finds it valuable, he’ll bookmark it and share to another bookmarker…and so on and so forth.. This is a powerful way spread the knowledge or the information.

We can benefit in 2 ways:

If the content was shared to you, it has a high probability that the content shared is valuable.
Just imagine if your content is being spread this way. Traffic!

THE POWER TO BOOKMARK

Getting back to basics. With lots of benefits social bookmarking sites offer, people may tend to overlook what bookmarking is all about. The ability to simply bookmark contents you find is very valuable. This can help you gather contents that is important to your research or study. It is also a nice way to collect articles that you find very interesting and worthy to be shared.

I find bookmarking sites very handy especially if I found a very valuable article but don’t have the luxury of time to read it.

Don’t just use social bookmarking sites to generate traffic, there’s more to it.

Social bookmarking sites such as StumbleUpon, Mixx, and Furl can greatly contribute to the success of your blog or website by giving your articles priceless exposures, and page ranks. These sites are gold mines, imagine having your articles promoted to millions of users. No wonder social bookmarking sites are also being abused by some users, and a must-target by spammers.

If we want long term success in social bookmarking sites, perhaps we should think about the success of the bookmarking site first. How can we be successful if the bookmarking site we are in starts to go down?

Here are some ways to contribute to their success:

Submit Quality Contents

Content is the bread and butter, the heart and soul of all social bookmarking sites. People visit popular bookmarking sites for its content. Submitting quality articles, photos, and videos will help the bookmarking sites’ growth.

Be Courteous

Remember that social bookmarking sites is a community. There are different demographics in different sites. As a citizen of whichever bookmarking site, please be courteous towards other bookmarkers especially to new ones. You are representing a community, you don’t want your community to be reputed as rude, hostile, or vulgar.

Be A Responsible Bookmarker

Keep your profile clean by having decent avatar, articles tagged well, and putting everything in the right categories/groups’ niches. These help bookmarking sites to look cleaner and have better navigation.

Quality Over Quantity

It is better to submit 1 to 5 quality contents a day than 20 to 30 poor contents. Bookmarking sites should deliver quality contents to the readers, thus poor quality contents can clutter around the bookmarking sites which can cost its credibility.

Moderate Thumbs-Up/Up-Vote/Digg Exchanges

If you are in a social bookmarking site, I presume that your are familiar with these exchanges. Some bookmarkers ask for exchange of thumbs-up/up-vote/digg to further promote the articles they have submitted. I stand that this is NOT wrong as long as you moderate exchanges with quality and worthy articles only.

Interact

Social bookmarking is not all about submissions and bookmarkings. It’s also about participating and interacting with other bookmarkers. One way we can help bookmarking sites to deliver quality contents efficiently is by voting and commenting.

Limit Self Promotion (For Bloggers)

Yes, social bookmarking sites is a great way to promote your articles and generate steady traffics. But that doesn’t mean that you’ll only be submitting contents from your site. Limit self promotion, perhaps submit 1 quality content from your site for every 10 contents you submit from other sites (1:10). Promote excellent contents from other sites, it brings good karma.

Bookmarking sites are very essential to bloggers and readers alike. Thus the success of every bookmarking site is celebrated by both parties. We are all important building blocks of these sites, so let us work together for the success of social bookmarking sites — and let’s be successful as well.

Social bookmarking sites has only one purpose – to bookmark; Well at least that’s the ‘main’ role of bookmarking sites. But then it is called “Social” bookmarking, which allows us to share what we are bookmarking. Not only that, these services also helps us organize bookmarks and collaborate with other bookmarkers. As we all know, social bookmarking is a great way to socialize and increase traffic (for bloggers).

But there’s a better news for us bloggers. Social bookmarking does not only help us increase our traffic, but increase our Page Rank as well.

As our pages were tagged and defined by bookmarkers, this will be treated as an external meta data that can give a reasonable amount of benefits to Search Engine Optimization (SEO) of our pages. Yes there are bookmarking sites who uses No-Follow tags to prevent people from spamming and abuse of links. However there are bookmarking services that DO NOT use No-Follow tags.
