Isn’t it nice when your readers frequently leave very good comments in your post? It feels like you want to give them great rewards. However, the quality and the mediocre commentators get the same reward when they comment on your blog:
- Exposure and Link.
But then, we want to give our quality commentators better rewards, better edge to separate them from the mediocre commentators. Or better yet, we want to SPOIL THEM! – Positively.
So here are some ways to spoil your quality commentators.
1. Recent Comments:
I believe WordPress has a built-in Get Recent Comments widget. By putting this widget, you’re showcasing your latest commentators. The more frequent they comment, the more exposure they’ll get.
**Note: Get recent comments widget also place the link of your posts that are commented. This is also a good exposure for your post and it also sends some link-juice to that post.
2. Top Commentators:
There’s a plug-in called Top Commentators that showcases your top commentators based on the number of comments they post. This rather the same with Get Recent Comments, the only difference is the top commentators’ name will be sticky. Meaning more and constant link + exposure for them.
3. Best Commentator/s Of The Month:
Perhaps you can dedicate a post for the best commentator/s of your blog for the month. You may brand them as your “Best of the Best” commentator or your “Top 10 Best Commentators.” Make a review of them and their sites to show deeper gratitude for giving quality comments on your posts.
4. Best Commentator Button:
Award your best commentators with a button which they can display on their blog. This button shall symbolize how the blogger gives quality comments and may help increase their reputation as a blogger/commentator.
5. Show Personal Gratitude:
Show your sincerity by showing your gratitude in a more personal manner. You can send a “Thank You” email for your very first commentators. Or better yet, a “Thank You” flowers.
6. Give Them Some Juice!:
I believe this is the ultimate spoiler. Give out some link-juice to your best commentators! However, WordPress tagged comments as No-Follow by default. This will prevent link leakage and abuse of the comments section. You can use the plug-in called ‘No-Follow Case by Case‘ to strip off no-follow in comments. You can also selectively apply no-follow to comments you don’t wish to give juices.
*
Better commentators definitely deserves a better treatment.
How do you spoil your commentators?
P.S. I already installed No-Follow Case By Case. Orange juice anyone? Cheers!

Oh dear, I believe this article will spoil the fun for a lot of bloggers out there trying to get a little more exposure and linkage for their site. Too bad for them…this doesn’t effect me..as I will never do something like that…or would I?
How do I reward readers who leave comments on my blog? Well, I “stalk” them some more. I write them an email, check to see their latest post and see if I can contribute to the discussion. Joining their MyBlogCommunity has become a routine for me, unless the author’s blog is a made for adsense blog.
I try to be helpful, too by adding them on my Technorati favorites. If I’m duly impressed with a guy’s work, I don’t hesitate to thumb it up in Stumbleupon – although I hate it a little to be solicited for a thumbs up in SU since I need to maintain the respect of my friends there by sending them to excellent sites.
Commenter of the Month feature is great. I’d consider doing that in my blog. Nice thoughtful post, Jed.
Excellent ideas, Jed. I’ve been wondering myself how to build comments and make it worth the while of readers. This definitely helps. I will look at the Top Commentators plug-in.
Hello Jed. I found your site and liked it and have followed you on Twitter as well. I couldn’t read a post about posting comments………without posting a comment! So here it is!
@ jan: Wow! You’re the TOTAL spoiler jan! Nice keep it up! It’s a pleasure to have you as a commentator. I’ll return the favor asap!
@ Spiritual Bloggers: Thanks! I’m glad this has helped you. Enjoy your spoiling! ;P
@ Jay: Haha well, as I said “Better commentators deserves better treatment.”
@ Mike: Thanks Mike, I’ll follow your tweets as well.
See now, I need to find how to do the top commenter’s widget for Blogger. I love comments on my site (I know…who doesn’t)
The problem with me on even dropping my Entrecard, is I can’t ever hit 300 (never) because I stop and read too many. ::sigh::
Oh well…
Hi Jed! I also love getting comments from my readers. It just makes me feel that they actually read my entry instead of just linking me their sites. I hope I’ll learn how to actually do those 6 ways you have mentioned. I just thank them by visiting their site back and leaving them a message or comment.
Anyway, I have given an award for you in my blog. Please check it out. Thanks!
All good tips. I like the idea of giving a badge out to the top commentator every month.
I also make a habit of Stumbling and passing on posts of the top commentators on other Social networks.
@ Grandy: Well as for me I only drop 10 a day..heehee.. If every I find a way to have top commenters for Blogger I’ll let you know right away!
@ Mara: Wow thanks Mara! I’m really flattered. How’s your job hunting?
@ Adam: Wow that’s a great spoiling technique there Adam! I’ll practice that one as well.
It’s simple but very effective.
Well,to start to I reply to almost all comments on my posts and mine is a blogger blog which I have made do-follow so lot of link juice…
And I even visit most of the blogs of my commenters and comment back!
What more better treatement than that!
@vivek: Wow! Absolutely, that’s one good spoiling right there.
You got all the ideas to spoil your best commentators Jed
great post and I will do this to my people
please…do follow me on my blog too..thanks….
amen to all.
hmm, from what i know is commentator usually from readers that feel they have something to say, even they want to say thanks.. for me all plug-in that involve commentator is good because it’s the way to appreciate your readers because your readers have spend their precious time to fill some form and write even a one word. So for me there is no spoil for my commentator.
anyway this is nice post. Appreciate your readers, reward your commentator
I have read it at many places that why tell your beloved about your past? That may spoil your present relationship.
