I attended the blogger’s event of Mr. Sonnie of Santos.ph last July 11, 2009 at Max’s Restaurant in Greenhills, San Juan. The event was about the benefits of Malunggay, or Moringa Oleifera. It is said that malunggay can promote better health and beauty.
The presentation was good, the food was good, overall the event was great and I would like to congratulate Mr. Sonnie and his team.
But the true value of the event didn’t just stop with Moringa Oleifera. The event also tackled very important points about being a good businessman.
YOUR BUSINESS AND THE VALUES YOU PUT INSIDE
They said that the foundation of one’s business is the values he puts inside his business. Are you service oriented? Customer friendly? Deal with integrity? Business is a system and people are part of that system. If people inside your business have different values, it may cause chaos inside the system. A good businessman puts in good values into the system, which later be the culture of the business/company.
Let me just share you a very short story taken from the Bible. This is shared to me by my music teacher:
Joshua was a great leader. He never loses a battle. After they won over Jericho, he ordered that all things should be burned except for the valuable things which will be offered to the Lord. But one of his man keptĀ one of the valuables for him instead. After that, all of the following battle of Joshua fails.
Joshua then come to the Lord and said why must he pay for the mistake of his man. Why not let the man who commit it pay for it. Then the Lord told Joshua that he is the leader, and he is responsible for the actions of his men.
We as businessmen/leaders, are the one’s responsible for the actions and values of our people. Don’t blame your people, see whether or not you have established a good culture in your business.
YOUR BUSINESS AND IT’S SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
A good businessman thinks about his business’ social responsibility.
Your business is more than a money generating system, it can change lives or at least promote a better living.
Isn’t it beautiful to see your business being able to contribute to your environment? or better yet, to your country?
The vision of the entrepreneur/pastor who gave us a talk last Saturday is to populate the country (Philippines) with entrepreneurs by empowering other people’s business by openingĀ good opportunities as well as educating young people become an entrepreneur through his business.
How? He’s selling malunggay products such as coffee, soup, tea, lotion, etc. Of course to sell these, he needs a marketing arm, advertising collaterals, etc. etc. To give you one example, he helped a young entrepreneur open a printing business. The young man prints tarpaulins and other materials which then he buys from for his product promotion. The tarpaulins he used during the event was actually printed by that young man.
Why did he come up with this vision? Well I think it is for the betterment of the country. He said that there are approximately 3,000 Filipinos who go out the country to work abroad everyday. Instead of being an asset to the Philippines, good people are actually going out of the country to look for greener pasture. Other countries then benefit from these talented and skilled persons.
Their tagline is:

I think being socially aware can make a great difference in a business. It gives your business a greater purpose.
YOUR BUSINESS’ RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD
He, as a pastor and entrepreneur, filled his business with God’s presence. The name of his company CHRIMI was taken from a very nice statement: “CHrist Is My Identity.”
I learned the importance of this through my dad. Our business is always centered to God’s purpose, and it had changed our life forever. Whenever I asked my dad how did he made our family business from scratch, he always said: “Well, I really don’t know. I just work and pray, and everything seems like to fall to its places.”
Just to give a short background about our business,
My dad started his entrepreneurship career in garments. Unfortunately, our business fall 3 times. Our first factory was eaten by fire, Second and third because of unreliable partners. Then we got to bus transportation business WITHOUT any capital. Started with just 2 buses now we have expanded up to 30 buses, and still growing. Praise the Lord!
A short prayer:
Dear Father,
Please continue to let the increase overflow in our business. May we find the purpose of our business more than the money it generates. Please guide us, and supply our daily needs. Please continue to be the foundation of our ventures.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
