Me vs Me

A stand-up comedian once said: “Practice makes perfect. But nobody is perfect so why practice?” Though this quote was used just to entertain or make people laugh, there are actually some people who really are like this. They’re the ones who tend to make excuses just to escape a certain situation or difficulties. As  Charles Swindoll said, “10% is what happens to us and 90% is how we react on it.” Perhaps to find happiness and success in life, there’s one thing you should defeat – Yourself.

Here are 3 steps that could help you defeat yourself:

#1 KNOW YOUR WEAKNESSES:

Knowing your weaknesses is the first step to build-up your defenses against yourself. It could be something you fear or perhaps a temptation that can really take you over.

As for me, I’m really a shy person before. I’m afraid being the center of attention. I don’t like public speaking, I have stage frights, I don’t even want to be in a large crowd. I remember when I was still in high school, I’m always hesitant to raise my hand even though I know the answer to the question. I’m afraid to be ridiculed.

#2 CHALLENGE YOURSELF:

After knowing what your weaknesses are, this is where the battle begins. Take note that I used the word “battle” not “escape.” When we encountered a weakness or a difficult situation, we should think of “solving” it not escaping it. There are times when we confuse ourselves that after we escaped a situation, we have already solved it.

Challenge yourself. Immerse yourself to your weaknesses. Be part of something that your weaknesses is your main contribution.

I know that I’m weak in public speaking, large crowds, stages, and other situations that would put me in the center of attention. But I don’t want myself to be that way forever. So what I did was I joined some school activities like DVBS (Daily Vacation Bible School) wherein I teach kids about God. Then I joined stage plays in college. After college I joined MLM (Multi-Level-Marketing) and sell some products directly to clients. I also do seminars regarding the products in front of a crowd.  I also applied to be a real estate agent wherein I approach a lot of people. All of these requires the presence of my weaknesses.

#3 PIN YOURSELF DOWN:

It’s time settle things once and for all. The only key to pin your weaknesses down is to have self-discipline. I know this is tough, I’m also having a hard time disciplining myself. By disciplining yourself to be consistent on strengthening your weaknesses this will eventually be a habit. The next thing you know your former weaknesses is now your strengths. It’s like working out at the gym, you should be consistent in order to build muscles and become strong.

Now I’m working in a big company, and I find my former weakness very useful. I can now handle customers’ complaints quite well. I can now also organize the crowd by speaking in front of them. I believe I won’t be able to do this if I let myself defeat myself.
