Growth And Evolution Of The Dog Industry

by JeD on June 6, 2009

I can’t believe that I went to Tiendesitas’ Pet Village and have OJ (my miniature schnauzer) groomed. I never thought that grooming is “THAT” necessary to dogs. Come on, why can’t we just bathe, toothbrush, nail cut, haircut and clean the ears of our dogs our self, for crying out loud. This cuts large costs in our dog expense.

But why does these pet salons like Pet Span kept on emerging. In fact, perhaps 95% of the establishments in Pet Village have grooming as their main source of revenue.

Well, the answer is simple. Demand.

35% of household have dogs, perhaps the number could go higher. And people these days are busier than ever that they don’t have the luxury of time to groom their pets on their own. Another thing, for the price of Php450.00 (based on OJ’s size) your dog gets complete grooming (bath, hair cut, nail cut, ear cleaning, toothbrush, perfume, brush) by professional groomers with proper grooming equipment. So do you still think it is better to do it yourself?

Thus Pet Span, OJ’s favorite salon, cater to average of 7 dogs per day on weekdays and 25 dogs on weekends. Doing some basic math, err… it averages Php38,250.00 gross profit per week and Php153,000.00 per month, am I correct? Well consider this profit comes from grooming alone. There are still additional revenues coming from dog foods and some other accessories. Good business eh? Moreover, Pet Span’s monthly rental for their shop is Php20,000.00 – this is according to their officer in charge.

I was really overwhelmed how the dog industry matures.

Here are some before and afters to check how the dog industry evolves:

Before:

It’s either you buy a cage for your dog or contain him in a room, and put on news papers where it could lie down.

Now:

Dogs have their own hotels and beds.

Before:

Dogs only wears collars.

Now:

Dogs wear apparels, shoes, even perfumes. D’oh!

Oj Shirt

OJ Shoes

Before:

Dogs play fetch and chews on sticks, newspapers, slippers, shoes, etc. etc.

Now:

Dogs play frisbee and chews on Nylabon.

The list goes on..

Diverse products and services, Creativity, and Love for dogs. All contributed to make the dog industry a multi-billion industry.

So what do you think? If you ever have the chance, will you test the waters in this industry?

@fedhz: LOL what is the interval of Spunky’s grooming? Monthly? How much do you spend? haha di naman ako sad, sometimes masakit lang sa bulsa. But everytime nakikita ko sya natutuwa naman ako. ;)

Yeah mini schnauzers are highly inteliigent, mahilig sila magpakitang gilas. :) one time nung natuto bumaba ng hagdan c OJ talagang inulit ulit niya hanggat sa nagsawa na kaming lahat hahaha! :) Try to train Spunky, sayang naman. OJ already learned the proper place to poopoo and wiwi. Pati sit and stay. :) next is lie down naman. :)

Yeah, I think the color of Spunky isa salt and pepper, same with OJ. But OJ is still black pero may mga redish redish na hairs lumalabas sakanya. :) Ok yang color ni spunky, wag lang maging white. Because white schnauzers is not an accepted color for schnauzers, reject ata un. :)

By the way, did you know that there are 3 sizes of schnauzers? Mini, standard, and giant? :)

I already saw the standard but yung giant wala ata dito sa Pinas. :)
