Choosing the Right Path

Choosing the right pathWe all have a childhood dream, and mine is being a veterinarian. I used to roleplay, having a desk setup in my room with those syringe (w/o needles of course) and other medical tools in my drawer. I’ll line up all our stuffed animal toys, and then treat them one by one. – You know, the usual role playing game the kids play. Then when I already grew a little older, my dad bought me some pets: I had dogs, birds, rabbits, chickens, ducks, guinea pigs and even a snake. I’m also the one who kept the papers and other documents of our dogs.

I even remember when I used to count the years when will I graduate from elementary to high school, and high school to college so that I could already take a veterinary course and become a true veterinarian. I’m already thinking what I want to be called that time as well. Is it Doc JeD? Dr. Chan? Hmmm… Well it seems like being a veterinarian is my “ultimate” dream… at that time…

PuppyWhen I’m already graduating high school, I am really not sure what to do but being a veterinarian has never became my option. Rather, I consider various study options at the Catholic University Tulsa or perhaps become a chef and have my own restaurant in the future. After pondering about it, I then took Bachelor of Science in Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management. The course has 3 tracks of specialization Hospitality Management, Travel and Tourism Management, and Culinary Arts. If I remember it correctly, we have to choose among these 3 tracks after taking the minor subjects – about 1 year and 1 term. Since I wanted to become a chef, I should take Culinary Arts.

After 1 year and 1 term, I was about to choose my track of specialization. I took Travel and Tourism Management (Whaat?) Yeah, I don’t know why but I don’t feel like becoming a chef anymore. In addition, I thought the specialization I chose is more appropriate because our family business’ nature is tourism/transportation.

Super ChefNow, it’s been almost 3 years since I graduated and have already worked for 2 companies. But I’m still quite confused in what I really want to be or what what I really want in this life. I think there’s so much I want to be that I confuse myself whom I want to be. There’s a lot of path that I want to take, that if I can take ‘em all I’ll take ‘em all, but still found myself stucked in same place thinking which path to take. I want to be the perfect somebody which made me still a nobody.

Heard this quote from the trailer of the upcoming movie IP Man: “Everyone must choose his own path.”

Awesome post Jed! This actually brought me back to memory lane. I was the same kid who wanted to become somebody and as a chapter ends in my journey, it changes. When I was about to enter college, the first thing I thought about is what is that thing that would jump start my career? So, I took computer science. It was not really my best option but during those times, it was the IT boom so, I was comfortable.

Like what you said, I too like to learn a lot of things. When I was already making money, step-by-step, I tried getting what I want and learn other things just to satisfy my craving and I was happy. When I look back, I make fun of the things that happened. Now, I’m a software architect, a photographer and own a small business. The 3 things I wanted to be.

I definitely understand what you’re going through.

I wanted to be so many different things in childhood and through high school.

In college, I went a completely different route.

Five years after college, and three companies later, I’m STILL not sure.

I got laid off about a month ago, and “they” say that now is the time to do what you really WANT to do. The problem with that? I’m not sure what I WANT to do, and I figure that for the sake of paying the bills, it might be easier to look for something that I already have experience in.

Prior to getting laid off, I wrote a post about 5 things I wanted to be when I grew up and I think I’m going to briefly revisit that and see if there is still any passion in any of those.

@ Laviz: I agree. Every where we go there’s a lesson waiting for us. And eventually it will lead us to things we really like.

@ Cee: Yes! that is the keyword: “Passion” We should find our passion. I think I’ve already lost it..hope I’ll find it again somewhere. :)

    Hi Jed,
I take the side of a school of thought which states ‘nothing just happens’ either positively or negatively. In this case being positive you have experienced life in different phases and all these contribute to you being JeD. I also believe they are blocks of learning and sometimes we start out desiring to be something but as time age and maturity come into lay we find out our attention or focus shifts to something that we would derive joy in. For some it may take time, others it may be immediate and for the rest the may never think down that line.
I rememeber when i was a kid i wanted to be a doctor, now when i think back my desires then was for prestige, class and importance. I felt i would be respected seeing my uncles, dad friends being respected because they were professionals. But over time i have discovered your profession alone doesnt bring about respect but rather self discipline, integrity, good character, skills builds up your personality.
In my case i didnt become a doctor laugh!!!, i studied chemistry, has worked/is working in a telecommunication/utilities company but i found out i was passionate about talking to people, encouraging friends colleagues etc and was involved in counselling at church.
I began to develop this passion and interest and work on it voluntarily. After some time i decided this would be what i want to retire doing for the rest of my life and i have to at least be a professional in my own rights. This led me back to studying and being accredited as a counsellor at a professional level and although I AM STILL FAR AWAY FROM THE GOAL SET I AM WORKING HARD TOWARDS IT.
Everything i have learnt in the past and present help me through so no experience is lost.

    Hope i havent bored you.

Will keep going through your blog.
    Thanks.

@ayo olaniyan: Whoa, nope I’m totally not bored. I truly appreciate it. I love this sentence: “In this case being positive you have experienced life in different phases and all these contribute to you being JeD.” I it really makes sense. Perhaps we are in charge of our life. Every experience and every decision we make contributes to what we are right now. What you have just said is priceless.

      Thanks so much! God Bless!

hi i sam ,i am good in science and mathsand am asking to you that what will be the best way to become rich?

    • http://jedchan.com JeD

@sam: Hmm..there’s really no right or wrong nor perfect answer to that. because if there is a perfect answer, perhaps there would be no poor people.

Perhaps I could just bullet some points that could help you with your goal.

1.) Faith/Pray. Ask God for guidance.
      2.) Learn. Don’t stop learning
      3.) Work hard. Really hard.
4.) Don’t be afraid of failures. It’s the key to success.
      5.) Be good to others.

Hope that you’ll bring this with you on your journey. God Bless!
